Tata Motors Embarks on Sustainable Manufacturing with UN-Backed LeadIT Partnership

Tata Motors, a global automotive industry leader, has announced a significant step in its sustainability journey by partnering with the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT). This initiative, supported by the United Nations and spearheaded by Sweden and India, is dedicated to facilitating the industrial sector’s transition towards net-zero emissions. This collaboration positions Tata Motors at the forefront of the movement to mitigate climate change impacts within the manufacturing sector, particularly in automotive production.

Tata Motors has made significant strides in integrating sustainability into its business model. The company has installed over 109 MW of renewable energy capacity, with plans to add approximately 300 MW in the coming three years, aiming to qualify as a RE100 company. Additionally, Tata Motors has achieved a 44% reduction in its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions intensity over the past three years, demonstrating a clear path towards decarbonization. The adoption of electric and zero-emissions vehicles, along with alternative low-emissions powertrain options, is a testament to the company’s commitment to reducing its Scope 3 emissions.

The partnership with LeadIT aligns with Tata Motors’ long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and its ambitious goals to reduce emissions across its operations. The company has pledged to reach net-zero emissions for its Passenger Vehicles division by 2040 and its Commercial Vehicles division by 2045. This commitment reflects a broader strategy that encompasses not only emissions reduction but also advancements in renewable energy, the circular economy, water neutrality, and biodiversity conservation.

Embracing the principles of the circular economy, Tata Motors has implemented TATVA, a comprehensive Circular Economy framework. This initiative focuses on optimizing material and energy use, extending product lifetimes, and maximizing utilization to minimize environmental impacts. The establishment of five Re.Wi.Re facilities further illustrates Tata Motors’ efforts to manage end-of-life vehicles sustainably, reducing waste and conserving resources.

Tata Motors’ dedication to water stewardship and biodiversity is evident in its achievements of water-neutral or positive status at three of its plants and its efforts to integrate natural habitat conservation into its business practices.
