BASF Forward AM, provider of advanced materials and 3D printing solutions, has reiterated its dedication to environmental sustainability, with an ambitious plan to lead the additive manufacturing industry in offering Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Carbon Compensated materials by the end of 2023. The initiative is a core component of the company’s broader #ProjectZero strategy, launched in Q4 2022, aiming to minimize its environmental impact.

LCAs are comprehensive studies that calculate environmental impacts associated with every step of a product’s production, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. BASF Forward AM currently offers LCAs for several of its products and aims to increase this to 15 by the end of 2023, the most by any material supplier in the 3D printing business.

The #ProjectZero initiative represents a systemic approach to sustainability, incorporating the development of eco-friendly products, solutions, and production methods. The company is also utilizing its Carbon Compensation (CC) program, designed to offset the unavoidable emissions generated during the manufacturing process of its materials. The CC program funds projects leading to long-term carbon capture, providing a short-term solution to carbon emissions while transitioning towards renewable energy and more substantial emission reductions.

By educating and encouraging its team to make responsible decisions, BASF Forward AM hopes to redefine its work practices, leading to a better understanding of its materials’ environmental impact. The company also aims to assist consumers in making sustainable choices by providing detailed information about the environmental footprint of its products.

In May, Martin Back, CEO and Managing Director of Forward AM, signed a letter of commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Back emphasized the company’s dedication to reducing waste, minimizing its carbon footprint, promoting fair labor practices, and supporting local communities.

“As a global leader in advanced materials and 3D printing solutions, we recognize the importance of working towards a sustainable future for all. Forward AM is dedicated to reducing waste throughout our supply chain, minimizing our carbon footprint as well as to continue promoting social responsibility by ensuring fair labor practices and supporting local communities. Our innovative work and collaboration with other like-minded organizations will lead to meaningful progress towards these shared goals as the only way forward is together.”
