The Apparel Export Promotion Council of India (AEPC) is actively working to promote sustainable manufacturing practices in garment clusters across the country. To boost exports and reduce carbon emissions, AEPC is engaging with various stakeholders, including brands, associations, and the industry. The council is emphasizing the adoption of sustainability practices such as water and energy conservation, waste water management, chemical management, carbon emission monitoring, and green building certification. This initiative is particularly significant due to the European Union’s decision to impose carbon taxes on imported goods produced using polluting practices.

In line with their efforts, AEPC organized a series of road shows in different garment clusters across India. The primary objectives of these road shows were to assess the current sustainability status in the clusters, allow them to showcase their sustainable measures to reputed brands, and gather best practices from across the country to present them to global buyers and brands. These road shows will also aid AEPC in policy dialogues with the government to implement suitable interventions that support MSMEs and ensure their preparedness in the changing sustainability landscape.

Sudhir Sekhri, Vice Chairman of AEPC, highlighted the significant growth expected in global garment production by 2030, with the Indian garment industry playing a major role. However, he also acknowledged the environmental concerns associated with this growth. AEPC has partnered with the Brands and Sourcing Leaders Association (BSL) for this sustainability initiative. The collaboration aims to recognize and award companies that have made notable progress in the sustainability domain.

Overall, AEPC’s initiatives and engagements with stakeholders demonstrate their commitment to promoting sustainable manufacturing practices in Indian garment clusters. By advocating for environmental responsibility and implementing sustainable measures, AEPC aims to enhance the industry’s competitiveness and address global concerns regarding the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
